After surviving what many saw as the hottest seat in America entering the 2023 season, West Virginia coach Neal Brown has been fired after a 6-6 finish in 2024. CBS Sports was the first to report the news of Brown’s dismissal on Sunday.
Brown, who formerly coached at Troy and is a native of Kentucky, leaves Morgantown with a 37-35 record in six seasons.
His first four seasons on the job were not quite up to standards at WVU as he never won more than six games in that span. He entered 2023 facing quite a bit of pressure and responded nicely with a 9-4 finish that will ultimately be his best with the Mountaineers.
However, that success didn’t continue in 2024 as West Virginia finished .500 overall and 5-4 in Big 12 play. In Brown’s last game, the Mountaineers lost 52-15 to Texas Tech.
WVU becomes the fourth power conference job to open so far in the cycle, joining North Carolina, UCF and Purdue, which fired coach Ryan Walters earlier on Sunday.
